I was reading the recent issue of Specialty Coffee Retailer magazine which focused on
the state of the coffee industry. What with green coffee prices going through the roof
and the economy tanking I wondered how others in the coffee business were fairing. In
the latest Harris Interactive poll it showed that 21% of the respondents no longer buy
retail ready-to-drink coffee in the morning due to financial concerns which is up from 15%
in the last poll, two years ago. This isn’t good news but the editor did make an
interesting note that provides hope. In the coffee business there is a huge degree of
decentralization that is not found in other consumer retail goods. From farmers to
importers to roasters to coffee shops there is a wide degree of independence. This
independence often allows each entity the flexibility in meeting consumer needs and
wants. I believe this is true because as the ArkLaTexs coffee roaster we are constantly
searching to improve our offerings and still provide a positive coffee experience for all our
customers. Once we are able to educate coffee consumers on the nuances of coffee
beans grown in different countries they become more discriminate in what types and
flavors of coffee they want to spend their hard earned money on. It’s not just about
grabbing a cup of coffee anymore but actually enjoying the coffee that is purchased. As
